Knowability from a Logical Point of View

چکیده
The well-known Church-Fitch paradox shows that the verificationist knowability principle all truths are knowable, yields an unacceptable omniscience property. Our semantic analysis establishes that the knowability principle fails because it misses the stability assumption ‘the proposition in question does not change from true to false in the process of discovery,’ hidden in the verificationist approach. Once stability is made explicit, the resulting stable knowability principle accurately represents verificationist knowability, does not yield the omniscience property, and can be offered as a resolution of the knowability paradox. Two more principles are considered: total knowability stating that it is possible to know whether a proposition holds or not, and monotonic knowability stemming from the intrinsically intuitionistic reading of knowability. The study of these four principles yields a “knowability diamond” describing their logical strength. These results are obtained within a logical framework which opens the door to the systematic study of knowability from a logical point of view.

Michael Dummett’s realism debate is a semantic dispute about the kind of truth conditions had by a given class of sentences. According to his semantic realist, the truth conditions are potentially verification-transcendent in that they may obtain (or not) despite the fact that we may be forever unable to recognize whether they obtain. According to Dummett’s semantic anti-realist, the truth cond...

On compatibility or incompatibility of the Qur'an with evolutionism, numerous studies are found. They, however, lack methodological properties, comprehensiveness with regard to the related verses as well as the accuracy This study focuses on the verses of the origin and stages of human creation with a comprehensive look at all related verses and its classification. After extracting the stages o...
متن کاملThe Knowability Paradox: does logic come before metaphysics?
The Knowability Paradox is a logical argument which states that if all truths are knowable, then all truths are actually known. In 1963 Frederich Fitch published ‘A Logical Analysis of Some Value Concepts’[3]. This brief article appeared on the Journal of Symbolic Logic and it immediately became a classic of philosophical logic. It is in this paper that Fitch presented the Knowability Paradox, ...

The English Dominican Herbert McCabe highlighted some ideas of Thomas Aquinas on the knowability of God and on creation, which can usefully challenge some widespread commonplaces. The purposes of this article are two: to present McCabe’s sophisticated doctrine on the knowability of God and on creation in a systematic way, and to put this doctrine into its historical context. In the scattered an...
